How Did the Tesla Roadster Drive Upside Down? The Ramp Flip Explained
What happened at the October 15 Roadster demo, why the car came off the ramp upside down, how the “Tesla: do a kickflip” meme started, and four ways to put your own ride on the ramp.

A week after Tesla's Roadster demo, two of the most searched questions about it were "how did the Tesla Roadster drive upside down" and "is the Tesla Roadster video real". Here is what the footage shows, what Tesla said, and how the clip turned into the "Tesla: do a kickflip" meme.
What happened at the demo
On October 15, 2026, at SpaceX's McGregor test site in Texas, Tesla showed the second-generation Roadster. In the clip the car drives up a tall ramp that curves up and back over itself, comes off the top upside down, rolls level in the air with cold-gas thrusters and lands in a cloud of white vapor. The demo was covered by outlets including TechCrunch and CBC.
So did it really drive upside down?
Not for long. Watch the clip and the car does not cruise along a ceiling. It rides the curve of the ramp, and by the time it leaves the top it is pointing backwards and inverted. From there the thrusters do the work: they turn the car the right way up before it lands. Tesla has not published a technical breakdown, so treat any detailed physics claim you see online with care.
Is the video real?
Tesla's demo was a real test on a closed course, and Tesla says the thruster feature is not approved for public roads. What is not real are the remakes: the family hatchbacks, motorcycles and corgis doing the same flip are AI videos. How it became a meme
By October 18, Tesla's own "Roadster" video on X had passed 2.2 million views and its "Track Mode" video 3.3 million. Then the caption format arrived: "Tesla: do a kickflip. My car:", placed over an ordinary car doing the same ramp flip. The joke works because the car looks nothing like a Roadster. In the last 28 days, "tesla kickflip" drew about 11K Google searches and "tesla roadster flip" about 10K, according to Similarweb estimates.
4 ways to remix it
- The old car. The older and more ordinary the car, the funnier the flip. Keep the dents and the roof rack.
- The motorcycle. Sit on your bike for the photo, and you go up the ramp with it.
- The pet. "Tesla: do a kickflip. My corgi:" A dog runs up the ramp on its own, thrusters included.
- The caption swap. Use the "My ___:" line for anything: your scooter, your work van, your grandpa's sedan.
