From Elf Yourself to AI Christmas Videos: A Short History of Holiday Face Videos

Every December people turn themselves into Santa's helpers and send the clip to family. The format is old; what changed is how real it looks. Here is the short history, and when people search for it.

The e-card elves

Before AI, the classic holiday joke was a cartoon elf with your face pasted on, dancing to a cheesy tune. Those videos are still around: "Elf Yourself – Breakin'" on YouTube had 89,697 views when we checked on October 29, 2026.

When people search for AI Christmas videos

Google Trends data for the US shows searches for "ai christmas video" peaking on December 25, 2025, with a quarter of the season's searches already done by December 1. "ai elf" stayed above half of its peak from November 29 to December 25, the longest window of any holiday term we checked. In other words: people start looking in late November and keep looking until Christmas Day.

What AI changed

Image-to-video models replaced the pasted face with the whole person. Your own face and body, a real elf costume with a gold belt and curled shoes, and real dance moves. YouTube tutorials such as "How to Make VIRAL AI Santa Videos for FREE" teach the format step by step.

4 ideas for this year

1. The moving Christmas card. Send the clip to the family group chat instead of a photo card.
2. The office party. "Me after the last deadline of the year."
3. The surprise. Make one for each relative and post them on Christmas Eve.
4. The before-and-after. Post the original selfie first, then the elf.
