If your feed suddenly filled with people hopping on one foot and knocking on a door that isn't there, you have met the Toc Toc dance. Here is where it came from, why it spread, and four ways to make your own version.

Who is Jean Phil?

Jean Phil (full name Jean Philanthrope) is not a real person. He is an AI-made character with a blond bob and a vintage suit who posts dance clips on Instagram. His routine is set to "Toc Toc", a French party song by Patrick Sébastien. Know Your Meme documented the character, and Belgian broadcaster VRT covered him on 8 October 2026.

The solo that became the template

The version most people copy is not Jean Phil's own. On 28 September 2026, the French TikTok account @castinggastro posted a solo in a white suit in an empty room: one-foot hops with a knee up, a fist knocking on an invisible door, kicks and a wide-arm finish.

According to MakeViral's tracking:

  • By 14 October that clip had 3.4 million views and 334,900 likes.
  • On 13 October the sound was already used in 2,378 videos.
  • A group version by @jeancultouw passed 9.5 million views.

The format then moved to templates. The most-played CapCut template ad reached about 1.7 million plays, and Kavel counted 17 CapCut template ads among the 18 hottest Toc Toc clips.

Why it works

The dance is short, the moves are easy to read even on a small screen, and the knock gives every video the same punchline. The empty room helps too: nothing distracts from the dancer, so swapping in a new person, or a dog standing on its hind legs, is the whole joke.

4 ways to remix the Toc Toc dance

  1. The original white-room solo. One full-body photo of you, the bare room, the classic routine.
  2. The Friday 5pm version. Use a photo in your work clothes and caption it as your mood when the week ends.
  3. The pet edition. A whole-body photo of your cat or dog dancing upright is the most shared variation.
  4. The friend series. Each friend makes their own clip from the same template and you post them back to back, since every video uses the same room and camera.
